Electronic & Electrical equipment Recycling
VRS recycles electronic & electrical waste for a number of South Africa's blue-chip
corporates as well as electronic and electrical waste emanating from countries throughout
Africa. Its business model, which revolves around recycling 96% of tonnage received,
creates employment opportunities for unskilled people, who receive on-the-job training.
Electronic & electrical waste is a growing problem in South Africa and we calculate
that at least one million tons of electronic scrap is dumped in this country every
year. Most of this disposal is done in contravention of the National Environmental
Waste Management Act, although the corporations and government departments concerned,
though criminally negligent, are often unaware of this. A few of the toxins contained
in electronic waste are Mercury, Beryllium, Arsenic and Lead. Typically, procurement
departments do not realise the legal and environmental implications involved in
purchasing and disposing of electronic equipment.
